The Friends of Ellesmere Port Network was formed in 1998 by a small group of volunteers, comprised mostly of parents and carers who wanted to support the work of the Ellesmere Port Network. The Network provide both residential and much needed respite facilities at Dover Drive in Ellesmere Port and in a network of houses in the community for vulnerable adults who are not able to care for themselves and who have a range of physical and learning disabilities including autism.
It seemed to us at the time that despite the best efforts of families, Social Services and the staff who were supporting our adult children in their efforts to live fulfilling lives that it was (and still is) very difficult for people who have learning disabilities to have access to the kinds of lifestyle choices and opportunities which we so often take for granted.
We felt very strongly that with the help and support of local people and businesses, we could make a difference; and we have made a difference. We have been able to help in all sorts of small ways; for example, we host a Christmas party every year which has become an institution and everyone loves it! We also support much bigger projects; such as the £10,000 we donated (an amazing amount of money for us) to set up an activity/recreation room: this has proved to be of enormous benefit and is being enjoyed by everyone. We are very proud to have been able to help make it happen.
In March 2000 we finally became a registered Charity and have never looked back. These days there are still only seven core members of our fundraising Committee so we have a lot to do, but we have had so much support from our local community over the years that it has made all our hard work worthwhile. So thank you to everyone who has helped and supported us along the way.
